Hi Pals,
I'm so thankful to the Humane Society of Northeastern Wisconsin for keeping me for 6 months before my humans came along to adopt me. Yup - I was held there for 6 months cuz I was a friendly fellow, but was black and white. Black cats get a bad rap you know! sigh! I'm here to tell you most of us are wonderful kitties if you would just give us a chance.
Anyway, this past weekend M read in the newspaper about a program that the Humane Society has had for 3 years called "Barn Cat Buddies." This program places unadoptable kitties (Feral) in various places where the humans are looking to control mousies! They are all spayed and neutered before being placed.
Our Herritage Hill (Living Histrory Mueseum) has 3 Barn cat Buddies - they have controlled the mousie population and are treated very kindly - to the point where they can be found lounging in office chairs in the barn or other buildings. They have trap doors so they can go out and come in at will, are is attentive, kind staff on hand if it's so snowy outside that it's unfit for a kitty to go out, then staff can feed them. It's and win/win situation for both the kitties and business they are working for. So we say BIG KUDOS to the Humane Society of Norheastern Wisconsin for coming up with this program and to the various business that have adopted these willing workers!
It would be wonderful if all these kitties could be adopted in forever homes like we have, but some are just too wild to become household pets. The Humane Society tries their level best to see that adoptable kitties get a wonderful forever home like you and I have. What do you think about this program? I am one of their success stories.

We think this is a marvelous program that, in combination with TNR, provides positive benefits for the felines and the community. As you say, Mario, win-win!
We have a Barn Cat program in our area too...we think it's a great idea!

We think that program is such a wonderful one. It sure gives the kitties that just can't adjust to peoples, a place to go. We have some here that stay outside all the time and there are two, that I am not allowed to pick up. Cats are very happy to be outside as long as they have food and shelter. So glad you found such a good home Mario.
Mario there are so many in the world who try to do what is right for the animal population and we are so glad that they all work hand in hand to help.
I know that the local shelter where I live adopt out barn cats and I think that´s a grreat idea too !

We think that is a great program Mario and we've placed some barn kitties too.
Some of the shelters out here have a Barn Cat program too, and I think it is an awesome thing! It's a great way to look out for the ferals.
That sounds like a great program! I'm glad that you got a real home, though, Mario. My bro Elliott had to wait 6 months too before my mom found him.

What a wonderful program. If the peeps would have returned me, I’d prolly wind up in a barn or something. Even though I sometimes call this place a barn, at least I don’t have to fend for my food.
It would be nice if those kitties found homes, but at least they are being taken care. That's a great program.
We have a barn at program too - though we do worry that some people tend to be a bit too quick to assign a cat to it. Some- we feel - can be placed in forever homes if only the humans were more patient. In particular at our place, they don't train the volunteers well on how to watch for signs of overstimulation. So there have been cat bites that could have been avoided. And one very sweet and friendly cat got "barned". We are so very worried about him!
Mario, I'm so glad you found your new family who was willing to take care of your teeth and give you a Fantastic home. I'm also glad your shelter has creative programs that help all healthy kitties find appropriate homes.

We are trying to get our local shelter to offer up the ferals in this manner, too. Such a great idea!

I have heard about a few "Barn Cat Buddy" programs around the country. I think they are fabulous!
I am so thankful that you were adopted by such great people. I am also thankful for all of the places and people who take care of those who need help and love. Hug.
That be a furry good solution fur the feral kittehs. But hey, I was a feral puppeh when I was a puppeh and I do not think I would has liked that. But I furgets, I is a dog not a kitteh, BOL.

I've written about the barn cats before, and I helped my dad adopt some! Sadly, these 2 cats were not actually feral cats. (I didn't realize til later on) I picked out 2 cats that were in kept in the shelter's feral cat section. Apparently, they had both been brought in together as an owner surrender due to "health" reasons. The human's health reasons, that is. They were so scared in the shelter, that they were deemed unadoptable. So the shelter added them to their feral barn cat program. I felt bad later on because Honey Delite became such a sweet girl with a little bit of patience. But, as she was probably an indoor cat in her previous life and not used to outdoor life completely she went missing one day. =/

It sounds to me like your local humane society is WONDERFUL! They're clearly doin' some really great work, over there.

Mom volunteers with a Rescue/TNR group in Virginia called Barn Cat Buddies. (You can check them out here: BarnCatBuddies.org). Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo were adopted from them. One of their slogans is: "Got Mice." We have lots of rural areas in Virginia with need for kitties like this, and the ones that are not feral end up in homes like our three sisfurs. I can see it being a win-win for sure; especially if the kittehs can be protected from the harsh winters and have food put out for them.
They must be wonderful cause they kept you safe for 6 months until M found you. :=o)
