The Longest 24 Hours EVER

Tanner liked peeking thru those blinds.
Hi Pals,

I need your help!  My two cousins were at MY house for  a sleepover - from Saturday nite at 4:00 to Sunday night at 4:00!    I heard the humans talking about when Sisfur and SIL take a vacation, these two BRATS (M here - Now Mario, they are very nice kitties.  They didn't bother you even one time - YOU were the a spoiled brat while they were here).  will stay for two WHOLE weeks - PALS - that is 15 days that they will be here.  HELP!

I growled mainly at Tanner (the one in the above picture) - M says he is the youngest and smallest.    Saturday night he had the nerve to go to my toy basket and pull out toys to play with without asking me first.   Boy, did I ever growl at him.     Then anytime he went downstairs, I sat at the top of the steps and waited for him to come up.  When he tried to come up, I growled some more!  he he - guess I showed him.  (Mario - that was really naughty of you.)

Tucker hiding behind M's artificial plant.

M here:  We had a peaceful night with Mario in bed with me.  Anytime I got up Tanner was looking out the blinds on the patio -  patrolling the property.   Tucker was usually curled up on a padded chair under the dining room table.

Mario has been an only kitty for 10 years now and he is spoiled.   We have had other kitties come and go - as we have taken care of a few different ones when their humans were going on vacation.   This is the first time Mario has shown so much jealousy.

Any wise words of wisdom from any of you with multiple cats?   I welcome suggestions.  Tucker and Tanner are delightful kitties and don't bother Mario at all other than trying to play with his stuff.   Next time I will try to give Mario more attention while they are here - that is one thing I have thought of.

Mario

That is Mario's house and he doesn't want anyone else there with his Mom and Dad. He will probably adjust as time goes on. A little more attention to him and not the other two is probably a good thing. He is just used to being in charge and it won't hurt Tanner to learn respect for other cats. That is a good thing.

We have been very impressed so far at how well Mario has done with his cousin cats. It's never easy to change the mix in any household. It sounds like the T boys are pretty diplomatic, which is a good thing.
Hang in there, Mario Buddy!

Two whole weeks? MOUSES! Two weeks is a very long time, indeed.

As you know, I live in a house with other cats already. Never lived here without other kitties being about. But even so, sometimes we all experience a little jealousy. Usually extra-loving does the trick. And maybe some treats. You wanna go easy on the nip though on account of sometimes, when we're all nipped up, jealousy gets even more jealousus which I know isn't a real word but you get my drift, I am sure.

I'm sure his stance will change as he gets used to them. Boy are these T cats very cute too.

I agree, Mario is doing good, he just needs some assurance. It is important to give Mario lots of attention and try not to vary from his routine.as much as possible. You need to help him see they are no big deal or threat to his turf.

Oh Mario, it's hard to see strange kitties come in and take over, isn't it? Wish I had some good advice, other than giving it time.

Giving Mario more attention is a good plan! I think it also helps to serve meal/treat to him first, then guest kitties.
I hope you all have good time together!

Sounds like Mario enjoys being the king of his castle and doesn't want the cute little cousins intruding on his domain. I know it went well having Mario visit them, but since he's a big adult male, the kitties may have been more comfortable letting him be alpha-male while he was visiting. Maybe a slower introduction in your home is needed. Put the cousins in a bedroom for a few hours, maybe even feed them in there while Mario gets his favorite meal or snacks. Then let them come out but maybe your bedroom be off limits so Mario can still be king. I know it would be easier to manage if they all had free run of the house, but that may be a bit much for Mario to tolerate.

There would have been a whole lot of more hissing and whapping here...
So far all the advice we see is good, we don't truly have any more wisdom to add...

I think they sound like nice kitties! Usually when a kitty gets grouchy about having other kitties around, it's a territorial thing, so make sure that Mario has special places he enjoys being that the visitors aren't allowed to go. That, and some extra attention, should help. Honestly, he's not doing that bad if he is just growing and not going ballistic or anything.

I think Mario is doing very well!! I would be hissing and a growling!! I agree with the others, just give him more attention and keep as much as you can to his normal routine! xxx

We went and stayed with Auntie Kirsten and her kitties for three weeks, so I guess I understand how your visitor kitties feel. It's hard to be in a new place. They're just trying to fit in.

Your routine was disrupted. But you handled it in a fair fashion. I hope you got treats for this! XO

Mario was being polite. When TW tried fostering Isabel I almost killed her when Pop tried to call her. I’m very territorial and jealous of Pop. He can’t look at another cat while I’m around or I will kill it.

Wow pal, you are surprising me! You are always the purrfect gentleman and it is ME who learns so much from YOU!

I have to tell you though, it IS kinda nervy of that kitty to come in and just take over your toy basket as if he owns it! Maybe Mom should put the toy basket away so that his scent doesn't get on it?

Maybe she should give you all treats at the same time?

I guess you are upset too because YOU like to protect your property, you don't need some other kitty to do that.

I am sure your Mom will figure this all out, I am an "only" cat here but with a dog, so I don't know as much as others.

Hang in there pal, your Mom loves you!

Love, your pal, Cody

Mario, I thought you were a sweet boy. Maybe you could try to be nice like they were to you when you visited them. I wonder if spraying some Feliway around would keep Mario calmer. There are plug-ins too, but I am always afraid those will start on fire so I get the spray. Or maybe hide his toys and have them bring some of theirs.

It took me and Lexy a while to get along. Mommy learned to be very patient.

Mario, you're not spoiled! We don't even like the introoder neighbor kitties on our deck let alone in our house! We're glad it's only two weeks!

MeOW Mario da nerve of those innerlopers. Maybe next time, since there's gunna be a next time; yous mommy an pay more attention to ya'. And maybe even put away yous favorite toys so they don't get cooties. A few treats wiff you all and maybe a good game of wand toy might be helpful. Hope it all works out okay.

Luv ya'

Wow! We're just amazed their altogether as it is! In our house, anytime we introduce a new kitty, Mom takes it slow and easy. She has a special safe room for the new kitty and makes sure us residing kitties get extra love and that we stay on routine as much as possible. Having lots of high places to jump to helps too. Put up with the temporay visit. And try to get the visitors in TRUBBLE!

Give them treats when they are all in the same room/feed together. Get them to play together ...the red dot/laser light would be a good interactive activity for them. Lots of extra attention to Mario when he is good around them...Hope that helps and that they will settle :)

Wowzers. Two weeks is a long time! We agree with the idea of giving Mario lots of extra attention.

Wow, that is a very long time. Like FOREVER long! We are a multi cat house and can say with all certainty, we each need our own space to call our own. That's hard to do all the time but our mom worked at it a lot until we all discovered it was easier to get along than to spend our days growling at each other. Not that we still don't from time to time, especially Patrol Sergeant Zuzu who thinks she is the boss of all of us. Good luck, and get along as best you can, we say!

Mario did way better than I do with TKS. After two whole years, I am still growling and giving her smacky paws if she comes near. I have ever lifted furs off one of her ears...unfortunate that...Mom L and Dad P noticed the mark I left on TKS' ear.

my old vet would say "tincture of time" I wonder if they play together on some task or game if that would form a bond? Poor Mario feels displaced as head cat. LEeAnna and Cole
