Thankful - I Am A Survivor of Feline Stomatitis

 Hi Pals,

Notice anything different about my mouth?   Yup - I has no toothies.   Now my pals that have known me a long time know the story and why, but some of you new pals don't know.   Since this is important information every kitty (and sometimes woofies) should know, we're going to do a quick recap.

When I was adopted at 3 years old in October 2008.   M took me to the vet that very day and the vet said it looked like I had a few bad teeth.  My gums were inflamed, toothies needed cleaning and maybe some pulled.   I also had infection in the gums.     Four different courses of antibiotics just didn't clear it up, so our vet sent me to a anipal dentist in another city.   He diagnosed Stomatitis and recommended all my teeth should be pulled or I'd never get rid of the infection and the bad gums could lead to other serious diseases down the road.

Here is an excellent article in my dentist's web site that explains Stomatitis.   If you or another kitty or woffie might have this, please read the article (click here)  and talk to your vet about proper treatment or a referral to an anipal dentist..   This is very important!

I have been Stomatitis free for 6 years, and living with no toothies really isn't a problem as long as I'm an indoor kitty and don't have to kill my own food or defend myself.   I even eat kibble.

If you want a blow by blow accounting for all we went through over an 8-month period, please check out the tab (Where Did My Toothies  Go) at the top of this page.   It chronicles our total experience.

I've joined @PepiSmartDog's blog Hop.   We are thankful to his mom for providing the blog hop and for all her work with rescued animals in Australia.  I'm also thankful I don't have to worry about Stomatitis anymore!

Wow, I don't think I realized you didn't have teeth Mario. I've met some other kitties before who didn't have teeth and they were also able to eat just fine. It really seems much nicer than having to medicate for stomatitis all the time.

Good to talk about stomatitis since it is probably a lot of cat's problem. We have at least five here with it. It is not a fun thing to have. I have I think six that were born with it. So it isn't just from any lack of care. Some cats are just prone to getting it and I have not idea why unless when they were little kittens and they didn't get the nutrition that they needed.

our Tim has this....he has managed to keep his fangs, but we suspect probably not for long....

I am so glad you are doing so well now that you are without your teeth, Mario. Good to let the rest of us know about Stomatitis and how common it is.

Wow. We did not know about Stomatitis. We did not know you did not have any teeth, Mario! Domino is missing some teeth. Mums worried at first, but he does just fine. We have been surprised to find so many of our friends also have lost teeth for various reasons. We think it is good when we can share experiences and how we are okay after all.
Hugs!

Oral issues are vary common in kitties and also often overlooked. One of my kitties' gum in the very back teeth is inflamed a bit. It has never improved even after dental cleaning and laser therapy. I think I take him to dentist at some point.

Toothie problems are the worst, and I'm glad your treatment worked!

Mario, thanks for sharing your story again. It's important that people know how important good oral care is for us kitties.

I'm so glad you don't have any more problems with your mouth since your toothies were removed. That seems like such a drastic treatment, but it works. I read somewhere that they're using cold therapy or lasers for stomatitis. I need to read up on that (just out of curiosity...I have a normal mouth).

Mario, your story is so heroic. Parker has the same issue and the vet recognized it. She uses another approach before pulling. So far it has worked. We go to the vet next month to see what to do next. Thanks for sharing your story.

Nice to know this good news!

My sister's cat, Stormy, had all of his teeth removed, too. He does well, and his dog likes the situation, too, since Stormy loves to bite him!

I brush my Thunder's teeth every single day, and I am very thankful he has a healthy mouth.
